Wedding Hanbok

A Korean wedding is woven from two ceremonies. The Western dress and tuxedo for the church or hall; the hanbok for the paebaek, the family bow ceremony that follows. We dress brides, grooms, parents, siblings, and grandparents for the second half.

Bridal hanbok ranges from the formal wonsam (ceremonial robe in deep red) to the older hwarot (an embroidered overrobe historically reserved for royal weddings). Grooms wear the danryeong, a court-formal coat in dark indigo or black with a rank badge on the chest.

Lead times for wedding hanbok are typically four to six weeks. For full-family commissions (six or more pieces in coordinated palettes), please reach out at least eight weeks before the event.

Styling notes

How to wear it.

For brides, the hwagwan (gilt crown) or the simpler jokduri sit lightly on a low bun. The wonsam goreum (ribbon) is tied centered, with the two ends falling evenly. A binyeo (long hairpin) finishes the look.

Grooms wear the danryeong with a black gat (traditional hat) for the paebaek bow. Family members coordinate in softer versions of the bridal palette, jade greens, soft pinks, gentle ambers, one shade off from the principals.

For photography, we recommend the paebaek hanbok be on hand by morning so the bride can be photographed in both looks before the ceremony.

Sizing & fit

Eric works with you on sizing.

Hanbok is meant to be fitted to the person wearing it. Eric works with each customer personally on measurements, so the piece arrives ready to wear. New to measuring yourself? Use the sizing guide or book a 15-minute video call.

Care

Keeping it well.

Wedding silks should be professionally cleaned after the event if there has been any food or makeup contact, and stored in acid-free tissue in a cool dark place.

Most families keep the bridal wonsam and the family hanbok for future generations. If yours is meant as an heirloom, we will include archival storage notes and the maker’s identification.
